Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
Many teachers have this book in their collection because of Reader's Workshop. I am encouraging those teachers and others to grab it and bring the focus on wants, needs, fads, and generosity!
Here are some ideas on ways to bring a few foundational financial literacy concepts into your ELA block with this book:
1) Do a casual rendition of the story in Reader's Theater format to allow your students to feel and experience these life lessons.
2) Integrate with a lesson from social studies and brainstorm in small groups other goods/services people currently "need" and dive deeper into the meaning of fads
3) Have students write or tell a short story that uses the same theme and wants/needs concept but with a different product, other characters, or changed ending
(have them act it out!)
This book is also a terrific example of showing how something that is no longer of use or value to us, can be just what someone else needs! Pay it forward!
Grab your copy today or check it out at the library and bring it to life with the children you lead!
