February 22, 2016 — February 27, 2016 is America Saves Week!
Shanti Saves Her Money written by Lisa Bullard & illustrated by Christine M. Schneider
Shanti Saves Her Money is the perfect book to read to your children or students during America Saves Week.
This quick-read picture book demonstrates the importance of setting savings goals as well as shows the reward of saving for that special item or event.
The savings-focused activity at the end of the book (Make a Special Save Jar) provides a simple hands on activity for your children or students.
Remember an EarlyStart is key to helping children become MoneySmart! Take time this week to help the children in your life learn to SAVE!
Most adults can remember participating in a science fair back in the day. Volcanoes erupting and egg shells dissolving in vinegar, right? I remember as a student walking around to see all the cool topics my peers had on display at the annual event. I did not realize then how much I was learning from them.
As a teacher for two decades, I walked my students through the same traditional science process. I taught second grade and my students always explored the ocean and created projects around ocean life. They too loved learning from their peers.
Those past experiences combined with my passion for financial literacy made me fall in love with the Money Fair concept immediately. I now work for a partner of EconomicsWisconsin that is also a nonprofit, CFEE, which has developed The Money Fair and is sharing the "how to" in the US and Canada.
Basically, a Money Fair has students take an economic or financial problem and follow the investigative steps just like a science fair! I attended the first Money Fair in Wisconsin last spring in Milwaukee at the BEAM Academy. It was fabulous to see students deeply diving into economic & financial topics. Check it out above and contact me to learn how you can bring this experience to your students! I'm here to support Wisconsin and my colleague Jan is available to support Illinois!

Perfect for the winter season and teaching creativity and entrepreneurship along with counting money! When I use this book in my From Books to Bucks program, children just love hearing about other kids doing something so out of the box---like a lemonade stand in winter! This is a perfect read aloud for families with children 8 and under. It is also a great classroom read aloud if you want to spark students to think beyond the basics. Whether at home or at school, stir up a pitcher of lemonade and enjoy the February book suggestion of the month!
Maggie Lou the Money Smart Marsupial enjoys lemonade with a preschooler at a faith-based From Books to Bucks event at St. Olaf Church in Rubicon, Wisconsin.
