Would your children benefit from some true R & R---the kind where you actually unplug? I'm not talking about rest and relaxation. Instead I am referring to two Rs that many of us these days could use: Realize & Replace!
My three kids (ages 11, 14, 17) are not as plugged into technology as most. However, our experience when we stayed at the Yankee Homestead in the middle of Wisconsin near the small town of Granton, let them realize the difference between truly needing and wanting. It allowed them time to replace their typical plugged in activities with new experiences that only the basics can provide.
Staying in a cabin that is powered by solar, has an ice box-literally with ice, and does not sport internet connection may not be a child's dream vacation. But it may end up giving your child that much needed R & R: Realize and Replace!
I confess I did not start out as the best role model. I hiked up the gravel road in search of cell phone reception quite early in the stay. But when an Amish buggy passed me on that road, I felt awkwardly embarrassed with myself and retreated to truly unplug! Once everyone realized and replaced, we had a wonderful time!
Ron Lieber's book The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous, and Smart About Money is a terrific resource for parents with children of all ages. This book provides numerous real-life examples from a wide variety of families. Ron writes in a way that parents can easily understand, relate, self reflect, and create an action plan. It is a perfect choice for the Book Suggestion of January: Start 2016 out focused on your children, family values, and money smarts!
This book is one of the main resources used in the EarlyStart = MoneySmart Workshop: One a Penny, Two a Penny Hot Cross Bucks: Equipping Children with Money Management Skills and Family Values.
